"D-A-D-A-G-No, no, that's not right." A slight girl sat on the grass in the courtyard, legs crossed and an acoustic sitting in her lap. It was a beautiful day to be outside. Warm enough to go without a jacket but not so hot that one would get sweaty and icky. The air was alive and breezy, sending gusts across the grounds and rustling tall trees. Her fingers strummed the strings lazily, no longer paying attention to what she was playing, staring instead at the world around her.
Students of all ages and houses gathered and chatted aimlessly. Kids pulled pranks, lovers held hands, teachers tried to supervise. Mary Gem watched them, a smile tugging at the edges of her lips and reaching her eyes. She loved this school and all the people in it, from Professor Binns to her best friend. It was such a warm, safe, comforting place to be. No matter what was going on beyond the castle boundaries, Hogwarts remained the same. It was timeless.
This was the place where she'd spent the past six years of her life, nearly entirely. Mary Gem was a proud Hufflepuff and wouldn't trade her house for all the Galleons in Gringotts. She had learned a thing or two, though most of her schooling had taken place beyond the classrooms. That was always the way it seemed to go, though. Education wasn't restricted to books and desks; at least not the kind of education she was interested in.
She leaned back, feeling the breeze tickle her exposed knees. Well, that was what she got for wearing ripped jeans. It didn't matter, they were comfortable. She generally chose comfort over fashion. Today that meant fitted, worn jeans with a simple white v-neck and checkered vest and old flipflops. Ahh, the weekends, where students could freely wear what they liked.
A trip to Hogsmeade would have been nice, as she could really use a glass of Firewhiskey right now. Even a cigarette would fix her craving for something other than pumpkin juice or cauldron cakes. The only downside to being away at school was that her vices often went unattended. That was obviously a good thing but she couldn't help but wish it wasn't so. This evening there'd probably be plenty to do, it was just a matter of killing time until then.
It was one of those lazy, uneventful days where Mary Gem was glad to have some time for relaxation but couldn't help wishing for something new to happen. Whether it be a new friend or spontaneous Quidditch match. She supposed she better get to messing on this guitar, though. There was no way she'd ever be able to teach herself without actually trying. Piano was her instrument but seeing as one could hardly fit a piano in her dormitory a guitar would have to do.

Quickly putting on black pants and a white button shirt, sleeves ending a bit above his elbows. Putting on black sneakers casually, then headed out of his dorm. Still walking, heading for the courtyard. Finally getting there, he smirked, spotted Mary Gem. Pulling on a fake depressed face, flicking his want at his hand murmuring,"Aquamenti.". Water spilled into his hand and he flicked it off, but dabbed some under his eyes, as if he were crying previously. Walking up, he faked a dramatic sigh. Sitting down next to her, he frowned. "Mary Gem? My mum died ten minutes ago.".
Ryan moved his eyes to the ground, pretending to be extremely sad. Of course, he was just pranking her. But she was gullible, right? Wiping his eye, acting still, as if brushing away a tear. "Stupid muggle car. Horrid, aren't they? Sent her flying, died." He said with a frown. Running a hand through his hair, he looked at her softly.

Mary Gem watched her friend take a seat beside her, fingers still gently strumming the guitar. It was nice to have some company. Maybe she'd figure out how to play this damn thing and they could have some music to listen to. However, she immediately stopped as he spoke. Her eyes moved frantically to his face. Were those tears? His mother? "Oh, Ryan... jeez." Her voice was quiet. She remembered losing her own mother and how hard it had been on her.
Mary Gem bit her bottom lip nervously and looked around the courtyard. No one else seemed to know that this had just occurred. Maybe he'd only told her. She wouldn't be surprised. People usually told her things like that. She was a good listener, she guessed.
Her knuckles went white as she gripped the guitar with one hand, reaching out and touching his gently with her other one. "I'm so sorry. Are you okay? Do you want to go for a walk or something? I mean, shit, is your dad gonna come get you? Do you want me to go with you?" She was trying to be supportive but not overwhelming, which was failing miserably in her mind.

Ryan looked her and sighed. He nodded slowly, sniffing. He smiled at her hand, looking at her. He gulped, sitting up straight. "You're such a good friend M-mary-" He cut off, looking away, coughing, pretending to sob into his elbow. Pulling out his wand secretly he flicked it, making his elbow a bit wet, as if tears landed there. Pretending to wipe his eyes, he looked straight. It was so easy to prank her.
"I don't even know, my dad got hit by the car too, but didn't d-die. Thank god. I-i could be stuck with Destin." He muttered, sniffing. Trying to actually convince himself his parents were dead, to try and act it more. Ryan frowned again, looking at her softly.

Mary Gem felt a pang in her heart for him. The guitar must have set itself down because she didn't remember letting go of it but she must have. Whatever. She concentrated on rubbing Ryan's back as he sobbed into his arms and sighed heavily. Her eyes closed briefly before she reopened them and looked at him.
"Well it's no good to think like that. Thank God your father's okay. Everything's gonna be alright, Ry. It's hard to get through it at first, but then life has a way of working itself out." She offered a smile of consolation and hugged his back with one arm. "And I'm here for whatever you need. Whenever you need it. You were there for me when I lost my mum and I'll do anything I can to return the favor."

Ryan smiled softly. He inhaled a large breath and said,"Got'cha. Joking.". He smirked and kissed her cheek to try and ward of any anger. Moving his mouth to her ear, he whispered softly,"Sorry.". Sitting back casually, putting his hands behind him to support him, legs stretched out. "Parents in perfect health. But still, living with Destin alone would be horrid." He said with a frown.
Yawning casually, running another hand through his hair. "That is going to get you in problem in the future, you know. Being gullible, that is. Didn't I use the dead mother on you like ten times before this?" He said, looking up at the sky, fighting a smirk. It was rather fun to prank people.

Mary Gem just shook her head as he told her it was a joke and picked up her guitar. She strummed it, ignoring his kiss and apology. She felt like breaking the instrument over his head. Why did he always insist on tricking her? Some of his pranks weren't bad but ones like this were awful. Buying her a candle that refused to EVER go out was much different than pretending his mum was dead. Again.
"That's not funny at all. Wasn't funny the first time you did it and wasn't funny this time or all the times in between. My mother died, I think you of all people would remember that." Her voice was quiet. She never liked this joke, easy as it was to get her with.
"And of course I believe you, Ryan. You're my best friend. What am I supposed to do when you tell me your mum's dead? Say no she's not?" She played faster, memorizing the notes as she tested them out. "I'd rather believe everyone than believe no one." She was upset with him. It was easy to tell because instead of her voice getting loud like most did when they were upset, her voice got very quiet. She poked his back with her bare foot, which she had conveniently slipped out of her flipflop. "We're not friends anymore so bugger off, you great git." She was kidding. Most likely.

Ryan frowned, looking at her. "Aw, come on, Mary." He said, going over to her. His arm went around her waist gently, pulling her on his lap. "I'm sorry. And I'm sorry about your mother." He said softly. Moving her hair with his nose, he kissed her neck, waiting for forgiveness. "Nah. I'm not leaving." He said teasingly.
"Mary, I'm really sorry. I should have done a dead dog or something." He whispered, placing his chin on her shoulder. He was just flirting as usual, Mary Gem was just his best friend. He then looked up at the slightly cloudy sky, smiling.

How was she supposed to stay strong and let him suffer the consequences of his pranks when he did things like this? She fought the shiver that shot up her spine at the touch of his lips but didn't manage to hang onto her guitar. It fell harmlessly onto the grass. Her neck was her weak spot and he knew it and that was playing dirty. What a typical guy.
Mary Gem turned her body, still in his lap, but more of straddling him now. He was a foot taller than her and she always felt so small near him. But her position was the one of power now and her face was level with his. "I'll forgive you but it's going to come at a price," she said matter of factly and cocked an eyebrow. Her face was serious but her eyes danced devilishly. She meant business.

No, that wasn't the point of kissing her neck, it was for forgiveness. Ryan smirked as she turned around,"Depends on what that price is.". He looked at her cocking his head. What could she possibly want? Sure, he'd probably give it to her if it wasn't something crazy. Looking in her eyes, he couldn't think of anything. Nothing actually.
He looked at her with a frown,"You aren't going to kill me, right?". He continued to frown at her,"Really? If it is, have fun in Azkaban.". But he doubted that greatly, it was probably something extremely simple.

Mary Gem laughed. He had a wild imagination. She smiled and replied, "Oh shut up. You know I'm not going to kill you, but I am going to torture you." She leaned forward, and poked his nose. "You have to come to the ball with me!" She then hopped off his lap and laid down in the grass, arms folded behind her head and staring at the sky.
"And now you really can't say no because it's not a request. If you desire to remain my friend and enjoy all the bountiful benefits that come with it, then you'll be a nice man and accept the deal as is." She felt so proud of herself for being so slick. For once the con artist got conned. And she got a date out of the way, which was her best mate so she knew there wouldn't be any chance of her getting bored or annoyed. Well, maybe annoyed.

Ryan laughed at the poke. "That still leaves you with Azkaban." He said with a smirk. He started laughing hardly, starting to tear. "Wow, you fail. That isn't torture, you know. Wow, Mary." He said, starting to laugh again. He would expect a thing like running around screaming,'I'm a chicken.' . But the ball was just extremely easy, it would be fun. Though he would probably come with a prank.
"That is probably the easiest thing in the world. Hm, out of all the guys in the school you pick me. Am I really irresistible?" He said teasingly, sticking his tongue out. Well, apart from dancing, the ball would be fun.

Mary Gem grumbled, sitting up. She folded her arms and pouted like a little girl. "Well I thought it was a pretty tricky idea. Maybe I'll make you wear a dress and you'll be my pretty little girlfriend for the night," she said playfully, winking at him. She leaned back on her hands and thought a moment.
She laughed again, shaking her head at him. "Definitely not because you're irresistible. I thought about going with a Slytherin, just for kicks. Or a professor, just for dramatic effect, you know. But I really don't think there's many guys I know that I could spend an entire evening with without wanting to drown myself in a bowl of punch."
Mary Gem sighed. "I'm pretty sure my ex boyfriend's the only one who'd be manageable but since he's a muggle and has no recollection of me, that won't pan out. And seeing as I do spend most of my evenings hanging out with you, you won't be an entire pain in my ass to go with." She smiled at him though, to assure him she was fooling around. "I don't even want to go but it's a ball and I'll look like a jerk if I don't go and I'll look like an even bigger jerk if I go alone."

Ryan laughed and said teasingly,"Ooh, fancy. On a leash? And heel? ". Oddly, if she made him, he would actually do it. "Or maybe a dog costume and on a leash? I could crawl." Ryan said with a smirk. He actually wanted to do that now.
"Sure. You know I'm hot. Ah, do you think they would say yes? You make me feel special." Ryan said with a smirk. He stretched with another yawn, looking at her. He looked at her in disbelief,"I am not a pain in the ass. Are you calling me a jerk? I wasn't planning on going.".

Mary Gem laughed. "You can wear whatever you want but we're going to have to match. Maybe you should dress up as a pimp. Big fuzzy hat, a cane, purple suit, the whole deal. I'll go as one of your prostitutes." Well that was an interesting mental image.
She frowned at him. "I should think they'd say yes. I'm not entirely unfortunate looking, thank you very much. Maybe if I had really big boobs it'd swing further in my favor." She looked down at her small frame, pulling her loose shirt tight against her chest then sighing and letting it go. "Oh well, there's always time for implants!"
Mary pushed him teasingly. He didn't move at all and she was unsurprised. Strength wasn't really noticeable when you were tiny. "And you have to go, of course! It's a ball, how often does that happen at Hogwarts? Everyone's going to dress up and look nice and dance." Mary Gem groaned, "You're going to be the worst date ever. I'm going to lose you five minutes within walking into the Great Hall and find you hours later snogging some girl in a broom closet no doubt."
