The letter fluttered from her hands and landed neatly on a log in the fire, exactly where it belonged. Slowly the edges curled and turned black, the paper crumbled, forming a pile of ash. Carissa made no attempt to save it from its fiery death, but instead watch it with bitter satisfaction. The last word she could see before it disintegrated was sorry. Her pale lips curled back over her teeth and a snarl emitted from her body. Sorry was not acceptable, not when it came to her future and someone fucking it up. Slender pale hands clenched into small fists and trembled with building anger. The once soothing coolness of the Slytherin common room now felt stuffy and suffocating, she needed to get out.
Slipping on her school robes she glanced around the empty room and quickly scurried to the door. She didn’t want to be seen at this hour, so getting caught was not an option. Stepping out into the corridor she pulled up her hood to cover her face and began walking the long stretch to the front doors. All around her was complete darkness, no light filtered into the dungeons at this time of night which sent a wave of shivers up her spine. Carissa’s fingers tightened around her wand as she wound her way up to the main floor.
Emerging from the darkness to a dimly lit entrance hall was a bit of a relief, but the prickly feeling of someone lingering in the darkness behind her made her move forward with more speed. Her heels clicked softly on the marble floor sending a whirl of panic in her throat, with the school being so silent her every move echoed off the walls.
The oak doors were in clear view, but with every step forward it seemed to get farther away, more and more out of her reach. Her desperate need for fresh air had turned into a whole ordeal. Finally she placed her hand against the door and took a moment to listen. There was no sound besides the soft snores coming from the many paintings along the walls, there was no approaching footsteps or angry voices. Biting down on her lip she pushed against the one thing standing between her and her destination, finally it was open enough for her to slide through.
Fresh air greeted her face like soft kisses, bringing a small smile to her lips. Crossing the courtyard in slow strides she pulled back her hood and looked up. Her pale face glowed in the shimmering light of the moon, her soft locks of hair looking darker in the certain slant of light. Overall it was a beautiful night and the air was cool and still. Her walk to the lake was short, but pleasant. The mood she had been in when she left the common room was well laid to rest.
The rock that Carissa found to sit on was not comfortable in the slightest sense, but it was better than the soft filthy sand. Pulling off her neck breaking heels, she dipped her toes into the flat black surface of the lake, sending a ripple through the water.
